WVU to hold second annual Day of Giving Nov. 14

West Virginia University, including Health Sciences and regional campuses, will hold its second annual Day of Giving, a 24-hour online event to raise money for scholarships and the greatest needs of the University and individual colleges and schools. Last year, more than $2.9 million was raised from more than 2,500 donors in the first WVU Day of Giving.

Patriotism, Politics and the Playing Field

Patriotism, Politics and the Playing Field,” a panel discussion presented as part of the West Virginia University David C. Hardesty Jr. Festival of Ideas, will feature national sports journalists, commentators and athletes discussing the intersection of sports, race and media during a time of intense political division and partisanship. A variety of timely issues will be addressed Nov. 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the Mountainlair Ballrooms, including the recent decision by the NFL to ban players from kneeling during the national anthem.

WVU LaunchLab Network to host second annual Women’s Pitch Competition

The Women’s Pitch Competition encourages female students to compete for cash prizes by showcasing their innovative ideas or business models in a tightly-timed presentation to a panel of judges. The prizes will help further fund product development and business ventures.

Physics professor to give 2018 Benedum Lecture

The Thursday (Oct. 18) lecture will detail Paul Cassak’s work on a phenomenon called magnetic reconnection, which drives solar flares in the Sun’s atmosphere, leads to auroral light displays and space weather at Earth and spoils confinement in fusion devices.

MEDIA ADVISORY: Statler College to host 31st annual Pumpkin Drop

WVU’s Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources will host hundreds of elementary, middle and high school teams from across the state and region for the 31st annual Pumpkin Drop. The competition aims to teach engineering concepts by designing an enclosure with the ability to protect pumpkins from damage when dropped from the roof of a building.

WVU’s Reed College of Media to host training on covering elections

This event will teach attendees about verification and fact checking, safety and security, data journalism and journalism ethics. Hear from visiting professor Mike Reilly, a former LA Times reporter, and Samantha Sunne, who runs a journalism tech group called Hacks/Hackers.
