A community of first generation college students is the latest example of West Virginia University’s commitment to creating the best college experience for all students. The FirstGen Living and Learning, Community joins seven other campus communities that foster “neighborhoods” at WVU.
West Virginia University is ready for The Great American Eclipse, the first to be seen across the continental U. S. in more than 20 years. The Department of Physics and Astronomy is hosting a pre-eclipse event Saturday (Aug. 19) from 9 a.m. to noon. Participants will receive “passports” that take them on a self-guided tour of mini-lectures, hands-on activities, planetarium shows and rooftop observing. The event is the finale of a summer of preparation for the eclipse.

The University will welcome 30 FirstGen students at a kick-off event at 5:30 p.m. August 16 at Dorsey’s Knob. Media members are welcome to attend.
FoodFest will be held in conjunction with FallFest at Evansdale, Short Term Lot 4 near the Student Rec Center and Evansdale Crossing on Tuesday, Aug. 15, from 4 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
President Donald Trump was briefed today about the opioid crisis in the U.S., after last week receiving a report from the Commission on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis calling opioid addiction a “state of emergency.” West Virginia University experts say that opioid addiction is a problem both medical and social, and the University has a multi-pronged approach to helping addicts and their families deal with their struggle. In November 2015, the WVU Health Sciences Vice President Clay Marsh convened the Substance Abuse Task Force to facilitate cross-disciplinary efforts and to develop and sustain approaches to clinical care, education, training, research, outreach and data collection.
Students will be integrated into campus life and culture through a series of Welcome Week activities and events designed to introduce them to life as a Mountaineer with a balance of academic, service and social components that will emphasize the importance of working hard, playing smart and serving their new community.
Although West Virginia University does not consider race as part of its admissions criteria, the University is committed to a diverse campus as part of every student’s overall education experience. WVU experts say the Trump Administration’s exploration of possible law suits against higher education institutions’ affirmative action policies is a threat to that experience.
Five undergraduate students have completed cancer research fellowships at the WVU Cancer Institute this summer. They will share their research findings with their peers and mentors during a symposium Tuesday, Aug. 1.
Between them, faculty at West Virginia University have hundreds of degrees and areas of expertise. Some of them also have “hidden talents” they use to engage others through community service and create beauty in different ways.
