West Virginia University graphic design students are helping one of the most rural counties in the state make a name for itself as a popular business and tourism destination. Tucker County has never had a highway to connect it to the rest of the world. That will change in the coming years as Corridor H – a 148-mile highway connecting Central West Virginia to Northern Virginia still under construction – nears completion.
Talking about the news and politics with someone whose views are the opposite of your own can be anywhere from difficult to dangerous. But there are “teachable moments,” as some West Virginia University School of Social Work have discovered through teach-ins that included presentations, films and role-playing activities.
West Virginia University alumnus Tyler Hartman was selected for a year-long journey across the world through Remote Year, a program designed for digital nomads to travel the world while maintaining their jobs by working remotely. After months of traveling between Switzerland, Morocco and India, Hartman is now exploring South America in Columbia, Peru, Argentina and Chile. Hartman credits his experience at WVU, which gave him confidence, adaptivity and agility in his work.
A group of motivated high school students across West Virginia in the Health Sciences and Technology Academy program partnered with WVU medical students to find out why so few high school students get flu shots each year. They are among hundreds of high school student research groups who will present their findings at West Virginia State University in Institute April 29 and at Fairmont State University May 6. Science presentations and hand-on activities will be ongoing from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at both locations.
Reed College of Media students collaborated with peers from Morgan State University to use new technology that collects data on how people across America access food. “Engage! Using Audience Engagement to Report on Social Justice Issues,” a day-long workshop Friday (April 28), will take participants behind the scenes of this innovative investigative reporting project with hands-on training by industry leaders.
One goal of the West Virginia University intensive Autism Service Delivery Clinic is to prepare children to successfully join a more typical learning setting by increasing pre-academic skills. Sesame Street’s new character Julia, who is autistic, can be instrumental in teaching children to welcome classmates with autism. The iASD Clinic sees children with a diagnosis of autism between two- and six-years-old.
Over the past few decades, the City of Pittsburgh has become “a model of Rust Belt revitalization,” and its revival, in large part, is due to the preservation and management of parks systems. West Virginia University will provide an opportunity for students and community members to learn about how the city has reinvented itself from one of Pittsburgh’s distinguished environmental designers and visionaries, Susan Rademacher, parks curator for the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, who will serve as speaker for this year’s E. Lynn Miller Lecture series Wednesday, April 26.
The work of Shepard Fairey, the contemporary artist behind the iconic “Hope” poster used during Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign, is coming to West Virginia University. Artwork from his latest project, “Work Against the Clampdown,” will be on display at an exhibition starting today (April 21) at the Art Museum of WVU.
