New performance-based assessment prepares WVU teacher candidates for successful careers

With debate swirling around education – how it's delivered, who pays for it, its role and/or worth in society – would-be teachers need all the preparation for the part of teaching that isn't directly related to their subject matter. That's where education Teaching Performance Assessment, or edTPA, comes in, and this fall, most teacher candidates in WVU's College of Education and Human Services will be required to participate in the performance-based assessment that will help them be more prepared for the classroom.

Upward Bound/TRIO students to present case studies at WVU

To prevent summer learning melt, West Virginia University’s Outward Bound provided a three-week summer program, allowing local high school students a first-hand look at what college is really about. This Friday, students will present their case studies in Forensic Anthropology.

Communication studies students promote law enforcement motor vehicle safety

West Virginia University students are focusing on the leading cause of police officer deaths—motor vehicle accidents—developing and testing vehicle safety messages for safe motor vehicle practices including speeding, seatbelt use, distracted driving and stress management. The project is a partnership with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.

WVU experts assist in local STEM project

Using help from West Virginia University experts, the Mountain Stewardship and Outdoor Leadership School, and the Morgantown Learning Academy have provided a solution to a current water resource problem. Students are reclaiming a flooded area of the garden and have built a pond.

WVU Extension Service camp allows teens to extinguish fires and stoke passion for public service

Giving teenagers from across the country first-hand experience in live fire simulations, search and rescue, vehicle and airplane rescue and first aid, the West Virginia University Extension Service Junior Firefighter Camp allows a true firefighter experience under supervision of industry professionals, while inspiring them to be community heroes. The camp takes place Saturday (June 3) through Thursday (June 8) at the State Fire Academy near WVU Jackson’s Mill.
