WVU senior researches volcanoes in Hawaii

The thrill of volcanoes led West Virginia University senior Holly Pettus to a National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates at the University of Hawaii this summer. Pettus, a senior geology student from Pineville spent nine weeks studying mantle xenoliths from Kilbourne Hole, New Mexico.

WVU’s Department of English’s West Virginia Dialect Project launches ‘WVU Voices’ documentary

West Virginia University is a diverse campus for students who come from all 55 counties in West Virginia, all 50 states and more than 100 different countries. To celebrate that diversity, linguistics professor Kirk Hazen and journalism professor Mary Kay McFarland have created WVU Voices, a mini-documentary that highlight the many dialects and languages found on campus.

The holidays can be a difficult time for many, but for young people who have aged out of foster care it can be particularly rough. The MODIFY Program with the WVU Center for Excellence in Disabilities (WVU CED) is accepting donations for holiday gifts to be given to youth ages 17-23 who have aged out of foster care.

The second annual West Virginia Legislators’ Forum on Education and the Economy will be held in Charleston, with an aim to engage legislators on how best to address the current landscape of public education in West Virginia. The Nov. 2 conference is hosted by the West Virginia Public Education Collaborative and sponsored by West Virginia University, Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation and numerous community partners.
