Steve Riffon, a retired U.S. Air Force captain, has been appointed the interim director of the Office of Veterans Affairs at West Virginia University, effective Nov. 1.

Colin Lopez, a recent West Virginia University graduate, has been named a semi-finalist for the Schwarzman Scholarship, a program that prepares global leaders through a one-year master’s program at Tsinghua University in Beijing, one of China’s most prestigious universities.

West Virginia University has named Garrett Burgess and Savannah Lusk the 2017 Mr. and Ms. Mountaineer. A Mountaineer Week tradition, the award recognizes student’s exemplary academic achievement and extracurricular involvement.

A scholarship at the West Virginia University College of Law, endowed by The BrickStreet Foundation and honoring Charleston attorney Thomas V. Flaherty, was announced Friday at the University’s Board of Governors meeting.

Several West Virginia University and community groups are joining efforts to discuss the Morgantown area’s approach to combatting the opioid epidemic.

Ronald Scobbo, MD and his wife, Jeanne, are donating the remainder of their estate to the West Virginia University School of Medicine, establishing the Ronald and Jeanne Scobbo Chair of General Internal Medicine in the Department of Medicine.

The 2017 honorees are Dr. Ronald Wilkinson, Most Loyal West Virginian; Jon Hammock, Most Loyal Alumni Mountaineer; Mannon Gallegly, Most Loyal Faculty/Professional Staff Mountaineer; and Barbara Bodkins, Most Loyal Classified Staff Mountaineer. The group will be honored during halftime ceremonies of Saturday’s (Oct. 28) WVU-Oklahoma State football game.

The world’s second oldest Pearl Harbor survivor will be honored at an event celebrating West Virginia University’s 150th anniversary.

West Virginia University’s Mountaineer Week gives students and other guests the opportunity to discover the historically rich culture of West Virginia and Appalachia by showcasing music, cuisine, arts, influential people and various traditions that make West Virginia unique.
