West Virginia coach Bob Huggins visited with media Thursday afternoon (Sept. 28) on the eve of his 11th basketball campaign at WVU, and his 36th overall. Official practice began Friday (Sept. 29).

Young people who participate in 4-H gain valuable leadership skills that will serve them well inside and outside of the classroom. WVU Extension 4-H’ers will join more than 63,000 of their peers in celebrating National 4-H Week. The week-long celebration begins Oct. 1 and runs through Oct. 7 and will focus on theme, “Grow True Leaders.”

WVU Medicine and the Rockefeller family announced today that they have appointed neuroscientist Ali Rezai, M.D. to lead the comprehensive and integrated clinical and research programs in the neurosciences at West Virginia University and WVU Medicine. He will do so at the newly formed West Virginia University Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute.

Emily Bausher, a student in the geology master of science program at West Virginia University, and her adviser, associate professor of geology Dorothy Vesper, are measuring the quantity and quality of the water along Peters Mountain in Monroe County in collaboration with the Indian Creek Watershed Association.

Lee Bakalarski, a financial expert in the area of risk advisory and assurance, will be among the new class of inductees.

Baseball coach Randy Mazey has been named the recipient of the Chuck Tanner College Coach of the Year Award. Mazey will receive the award at the 11th annual Chuck Tanner Awards Banquet on Saturday, Nov. 11, at the Rivers Club in Downtown Pittsburgh.

Recognizing the importance of overall health and wellness to academic, professional and personal success, West Virginia University is creating a system-wide initiative to coordinate and improve efforts in those areas. Supported by a substantial gift from Natalie and Wes Bush, the Bush Fund for Health Promotion and Wellness will be directed by Dean of Nursing Tara Hulsey, who will also continue in her current role while adding responsibilities as vice president of health sciences for health promotion and wellness.

Praveen Majjigapu, a doctoral student in civil engineering at West Virginia University, is a finalist in the Collegiate Inventors Competition, an annual competition that rewards innovations, discoveries and research by college and university students and their faculty advisors. He will present his invention — NextGen Structural Rehab System — to a panel of final-round judges on November 2.

The 16 men's basketball members and five women's basketball members will make the initial entrance into the Mountaineer Legends Society, joining the 36 football legends, who were introduced last fall and are on display at Milan Puskar Stadium.
