Five of the state’s best and brightest senior high school students who had their choice of some of the nation’s most esteemed colleges have chosen to attend West Virginia University as 2019 Foundation Scholars, the highest academic scholarship the University awards.
An Olympic gold medalist, a retired master sergeant of the U.S. Air Force, a musician, a humanitarian and a legacy who has carried on the Mountaineer spirit as the 21st family member to attend West Virginia University are among those who will receive WVU’s highest student honor, the Order of Augusta.
This year’s honorees are Manal AlNatour, Dana Huebert Lima, Kimberly Meigh, Joshua Osbourn, Audra Slocum and Andrea Taliaferro. Established in 1985 by the WVU Foundation, the Outstanding Teaching Award honors faculty who are particularly effective and inspiring teachers, as well as faculty who have established patterns of exceptional innovation in their teaching methods, course and curriculum design and instructional tools.
Maryanne Reed, who transformed West Virginia University’s journalism school into an exemplar of modern media training as the Reed College of Media, was named provost and vice president for academic affairs of the University on Wednesday (April 17).

It’s a common sight in much of West Virginia — ATVs and UTVs rushing up secondary roads, riding along forest trails and running across the hills. Given their popularity, the West Virginia University Extension Service is teaming up with the Polaris Foundation to improve safe riding practices and help reduce injuries and accidents. This initiative is of importance as West Virginia leads the nation in the number of ATV- and UTV-related deaths per capita with rates eight times the national average.

WVU employees can give to programs or funds across the University they feel passionately about, including scholarship funds, specific departments/units, academic programs and special faculty/student support initiatives.
This year’s Bucklew Scholars are eager to embark on a new journey at West Virginia University where they can fully immerse themselves in rigorous academics, multidisciplinary research, travel abroad and University tradition.
