A record number of West Virginia University students have been awarded the prestigious Boren Scholarship enabling them to study languages in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests.
Two West Virginia University undergraduate students have been awarded National Science Foundation funded summer research fellowships with the National Institute for Standards and Technology, one of the leading research organizations in the world.
One West Virginia University student’s research on sugary sodas and liver disease will take her to Capitol Hill this week to meet with congressional representatives and advocate for undergraduate research. Teams featuring seven engineering students from West Virginia University captured the top three places in the Third Annual Target Case Study Competition. Juniors and Honors students Anna Gilpin, a biomedical engineering major from Martinsburg, and Jared Beard, a mechanical engineering major and physics minor from Morgantown, are the 43rd and 44th students at WVU to earn the award since the program’s inception in 1986. The scholarship provides as much as $7,500 for tuition, fees, books, room and board for students who demonstrate their aptitude through course work and their own original research.
This year’s cohort of Bucklew Scholars comes to West Virginia University with a few common goals, most notably an education that will allow them to search for solutions to what they see as the world problems their generation will be faced with overcoming.
The West Virginia University LaunchLab’s inaugural March Idea Challenge ended on a high note last week, when Political Science major Roark Sizemore and Economics major Courtney Pyatt were awarded first place. The two, both juniors and Honors College students, won for their pitch for Pantry Plus More, a start-up nonprofit company that provides food and personal hygiene items to K-12 students in Monongalia County public schools.
