Candidates for West Virginia University’s 2017 Homecoming court have been selected.

Acknowledging the challenges West Virginia faces while emphasizing the opportunities it has before it, West Virginia University President Gordon Gee delivered his fall State of the University address during Monday’s annual Faculty Assembly meeting held at the Erickson Alumni Center.

The West Virginia University system began classes Wednesday with record numbers of first-time freshmen enrollment – 6,224 across its three campuses in Morgantown, Beckley and Keyser. The incoming class also features higher test scores and an increase in international students.

West Virginia University is opening a new center for the humanities to support innovative, collaborative, and interdisciplinary faculty research in all humanities fields. Dr. Ryan Claycomb will serve as founding interim director.

Welcome Week will begin on Thursday, Aug. 10 and extend through Tuesday, Aug. 15. Classes for first-year and returning students begin on Wednesday, Aug. 16.

Not only are West Virginia University’s Engineering Challenge Camps a great way to introduce students to the possibilities in STEM-related fields, they also serve as a great recruiting tool for the Statler College.

Within hours of learning about flooding in southern West Virginia last year, the WVU community sprang into action, and is still working on recovery projects in the flood-damaged region as we approach the first anniversary of the devastating event.

From sports to the arts to building a rocket, there is a summer camp experience for all ages at West Virginia University. All summer, these camps, both on and off campus show future Mountaineers what it is like to go first.

Two West Virginia University students will take their research projects to a new level and one NSF fellow will bring her research to the Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources thanks to prestigious graduate fellowships from the National Science Foundation. And they credit their success to the faculty who mentored and supported them.

West Virginia University will prepare undergraduate students for a global career and a competitive edge when applying to the Peace Corps through a new certificate program that aligns curriculum and service learning to meet the needs of this internationally recognized organization.
