West Virginia University was notified Sunday afternoon (April 12) by the Monongalia County Health Department that a resident in one of its residence halls tested positive for coronavirus COVID-19. WVU is working with MCHD and West Virginia’s state public health officials to ensure the health and safety of all residents and employees who have recently been working in the Evansdale Residential Complex, more commonly referred to as Towers.
West Virginia University and its divisional campuses in Keyser and Beckley will extend alternative delivery of classes through the rest of the semester in response to the continued threat of the novel coronavirus COVID-19. Additionally, all employees – except for those needed to keep online operations running and a select few others – must work from home, and residence halls will remain shuttered.
West Virginia University will temporarily suspend in-person classes the week following spring break then offer online class instruction or other alternative learning options beginning March 30 as it continues to monitor the threat of novel coronavirus. All other online-only classes will continue as originally scheduled.
The victim was identified as Eric James Smith, 21, a sophomore majoring in multidisciplinary studies from Clementon N.J. Smith was a former resident of the College Park where the shooting occurred. Two suspects were arrested shortly after the shooting and are expected to be arraigned Friday afternoon. The suspects are Terrell Linear, 21, and Shaundarius T. Reeder 20. Both are charged with first-degree murder. Both are from Fairmont and neither is a WVU student. Both were arraigned Friday in Monongalia County Magistrate Court.

Affected chemical materials were removed from the Engineering Research Building Tuesday (Oct. 22) and normal operations resumed Thursday (Oct. 23) in the building. Students, faculty and staff in the ERB were sent home for the day (Tuesday, Oct. 22) as a precaution after a chemical accident inside one of the laboratories.
