Two couples who have given tirelessly of their time, talent and resources to West Virginia University were honored today (Nov. 15) in the state of Pennsylvania on National Philanthropy Day.

As part of an ongoing commitment to battle opioid addiction, the Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute at West Virginia University today marked a major milestone, enrolling the first patient in a randomized clinical trial that will test the effectiveness of an injectable non-opioid, non-steroid micropellet to treat sciatica.

Research at West Virginia University will focus on turning carbon dioxide in power plant flue gas into commercial-quality sodium bicarbonate—baking soda—aiming to use product sales to lower the cost of carbon capture technology.

Ryan Claycomb, former associate dean of the Honors College and founding director of the West Virginia University Humanities Center, has been named acting dean of the Honors College effective Nov. 26.

Agriculture continues to grow in West Virginia; however, for the state’s food producers, there are barriers to safely producing, marketing and selling their products. To help break down those barriers, faculty from the West Virginia University Davis College of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Design and WVU Extension Service are partnering with the WV Department of Agriculture to create a customized food safety education and outreach program geared toward extension agents, commercial kitchens, home kitchens, incubator kitchens and food producers.

Supporters of West Virginia University donated more than $6 million Wednesday (Nov. 14) during the University’s second annual Day of Giving, more than doubling last year’s total. It was promoted as “One Day to Give Back” and donors responded making 3,001 gifts during the 24-hour online giving event totaling over $6.2 million.

Amna Umer, an epidemiologist in the West Virginia University Department of Pediatrics, and her research team are working to circumvent barriers to effective healthcare for infants with neonatal-abstinence syndrome. In a recent project, they evaluated a new tool to collect real-time information on statewide NAS diagnoses and cases of fetal substance exposure. Their goal is to help make West Virginia the first state with such a system.

Donors to West Virginia University’s second annual Day of Giving Wednesday (Nov. 14) could see their investments grow immediately thanks to other generous University supporters.

The game’s release will also keep busy three West Virginia University researchers who’ll target how these post-apocalyptic depictions of West Virginia influence perceptions of the state and its people.

West Virginia University School of Public Health students recently had the opportunity to join their peers and health experts from across the country to share ideas and solutions for our nation’s most pressing health issues.
