A rocket scientist who oversaw many of NASA’s Space Shuttle launches will present a lecture at West Virginia University Monday (Nov. 6).

Artificial intelligence has a serious diversity problem. Algorithms that increasingly influence much of our daily lives are created by technologists who aren’t necessarily doing the best job representing gender, racial or economic diversity. That’s why the West Virginia University Reed College of Media has teamed up with MediaShift to co-host “Hack the Gender Gap: A Women’s Hackathon on Diversifying AI,” which will bring together college-aged women from around the country to add their voices to the emerging artificial intelligence market.

Prescription medications, including antidepressants and pain medications, can have various side effects and risks, and a West Virginia University researcher is examining whether patients understand the risks associated with driving. Robin Pollini, Associate Director of the WVU School of Public Health’s Injury Control Research Center, led a study on driver awareness of the potential effects of prescription medications.

Emily Calandrelli, a West Virginia University alumna who is currently the Emmy-nominated host of FOX’s Xploration Outer Space and chief correspondent on Netflix’s show, “Bill Nye Saves the World,” returns to campus as a scholar-in-residence Nov. 6-7. She will also share her passion for space exploration in an “Evening with the Space Gal,” at 7:30 p.m. Monday (Nov. 6), in the Mountainlair Ballrooms. This event is open to the public.

Water is the driving force of all nature, but how do people react when an area begins to run out of water? Martina Angela Caretta, assistant professor of geography at West Virginia University, seeks to answer that question in a report she co-authored for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

Steve Riffon, a retired U.S. Air Force captain, has been appointed the interim director of the Office of Veterans Affairs at West Virginia University, effective Nov. 1.
