West Virginia University continued to demonstrate why it’s the Mountain State’s land-grant, flagship R1 institution over the course of 2024. Here are some of the top research stories from the year.

Armed with resilience and perseverance, more than 1,000 August and December West Virginia University graduates poised for success participated in two Commencement ceremonies Saturday (Dec. 21) at the Coliseum.

A West Virginia University student is continuing on the path of service he started while in high school — as a volunteer for community canned food drives, trail maintenance and garbage cleanup projects — thanks to private scholarship support. Izaak Whetsell, an Elkins native, is among 24 students to benefit from a recent $100,000 gift made by WVU alumnus Andrew S. Good.

Providing support to West Virginia University student parents working toward graduation is Student Family Resources, a unit within Student Life dedicated to helping students with families achieve their higher education goals.

Alongside hundreds of graduates, West Virginia University will present two outstanding alumni and an educator with Presidential Honorary Degrees while also recognizing two leading faculty members during Commencement ceremonies, Saturday, Dec. 21, at the Coliseum.

West Virginia University has named Haley Bockius, Laasya Chennuru, Mary G. Roush, Christopher J. Smith and Dakota Swiger the 2024 Mountaineers of Distinction, a Mountaineer Week tradition that recognizes exemplary academic achievement and extracurricular involvement.

Relief is coming for crime scene investigators and toxicologists who have struggled to accurately and swiftly identify drugs that have been seized by law enforcement and may be relied on as evidence at trial, thanks to a research partnership between West Virginia University and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

Each year, West Virginia University honors dedicated Mountaineers who go above and beyond to positively impact the lives of others and make the University a special place as part of Mountaineer Week. The 2024 recipients are Steve Conrad, Most Loyal West Virginian; Scott Branham, Most Loyal Alumni Mountaineer; Rebecca Fint-Clark, Most Loyal Faculty/Professional Staff; and Donna Staggs, Most Loyal Staff Mountaineer.

Philanthropic support is expanding opportunities for West Virginia University students to build community by getting outside, pursuing hobbies, sharing meals and more while developing critical skills to promote their future success and well-being.
