Finalists to compete in WVU Mountaineer mascot cheer-off event

Four West Virginia University students vying to become the 71st Mountaineer mascot will wear buckskins, a coonskin cap and carry a rifle as they compete in a cheer-off during the men’s basketball game against TCU at 9 p.m. Tuesday (Feb. 25) in the WVU Coliseum.

WVU maintains prominent R1 ranking as top US research university

West Virginia University was reaffirmed as an R1 university, the highest possible research ranking, in the 2025 rankings by the American Council on Education and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching released Thursday (Feb. 13). WVU is the only R1 institution in West Virginia and one of 187 colleges and universities nationwide to earn the latest prestigious classification.

West Virginia University has named Haley Bockius, Laasya Chennuru, Mary G. Roush, Christopher J. Smith and Dakota Swiger the 2024 Mountaineers of Distinction, a Mountaineer Week tradition that recognizes exemplary academic achievement and extracurricular involvement.

WVU alumna earns Fulbright scholarship

Clara Haizlett of Bethany, a West Virginia University graduate with a passion for storytelling and exploring cultural similarities between Appalachia and the Arab world, is the recipient of a prestigious Fulbright scholarship, the U.S. government’s flagship international exchange program.
