West Virginia University launched a new public dashboard today (Aug. 3) to track and compile COVID-19 information collected during testing across the WVU System.

West Virginia’s rural residents will have more access to dental care through teledentistry —the process of connecting dentists and patients online— provided by WVU Dental Care in partnership with dentists and oral health specialists from the West Virginia University School of Dentistry.

West Virginia University has extended the payment deadline for certain fall charges so students have more time to plan after announcing a phased Return to Campus in Morgantown. The payment deadline for fall charges on July eBills is now September 1 instead of August 1.

West Virginia University students will have a phased return to the Morgantown campus that includes a later class start date (Aug. 26) and hybrid or online delivery for upper division undergraduate courses, President Gordon Gee announced in a letter to the WVU community today (July 27).

West Virginia University Board of Governors Chairman David Alvarez began Friday’s (July 24) special meeting by welcoming Chase Riggs, who replaces Kate Dye as the student representative, as well as Dr. Patrice Harris, who was appointed to the BOG earlier in the day by Gov. Jim Justice. Harris replaces JR Rogers with a term that expires June 30, 2024.

A new pilot project launched by the West Virginia University School of Medicine in partnership with the DTE Energy Foundation will deploy physicians to respond to emergencies in rural areas of West Virginia, improving access to – and quality of – emergency care to save lives statewide.

Just as nerve cells don’t work in isolation when we think, speak or move, neuroscientists don’t work alone when they study the nervous system. WVU is launching the Center for Foundational Neuroscience Research and Education, which will help researchers from across the university collaborate on—and get funding for—neuroscience research. Randy Nelson, who chairs the Department of Neuroscience, will direct it.

West Virginia University Dean of Students Corey Farris outlined in a letter to students today (July 21) the precautions the University will take and students will be expected to take as they return to campus Aug. 19.

WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute (RNI) researchers have developed new tools, including the forecasting of temperature and a “Health Index,” to warn users of the onset of COVID-19 related symptoms and signs of infection in real time.

Although declining reports of child abuse and neglect during the last few months may seem like good news, it raises a red flag to public health experts at West Virginia University and officials at the West Virginia Center for Children’s Justice, as social isolation can leave a victim with no outlet for escape.
