With a backlog of DNA cases at the West Virginia State Police Forensic Laboratory and a push to do more with less money, Sheri Lemons needed help. The director of the state crime lab was desperate to apply business skills to forensic science, so she turned to West Virginia University to help her manage people, money and projects. After having their tonsils removed, patients often can't leave the hospital for six hours, even if they bounce back from surgery sooner. Hospital policy commonly mandates a six-hour recovery time. But research led by Habib Zalzal, a resident in the West Virginia University School of Medicine, suggests that not all tonsillectomy patients have to wait that long.
