If you want to educate primary and secondary school students about the importance of understanding money, the first step is to educate their teachers. That is the premise of the annual Finance University conference hosted by the College of Business and Economics at West Virginia University, as the business school prepares for its 16th weeklong session July 9-13 with state teachers in Charleston.

The West Virginia University Foundation is acknowledging those alumni and friends of WVU who have created endowed scholarships, fellowships and student awards in calendar year 2017. Eighty-three donors are being honored by having bricks engraved with their name placed in the Ernest L. Hogan Scholars Walk, the pathway located at the downtown campus library.

WVU Medicine Children’s has received its first national ranking from U.S. News & World Report, tied for 42nd in the nation for pediatric urology with Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital.

To meet growing healthcare needs locally and statewide, the West Virginia University School of Medicine is launching a new physician assistant education program. The 26-month, full-time graduate program will lead to a master’s degree in health sciences. The program will begin accepting students in January 2020 and is comprised of four semesters of classroom instruction followed by a full year of clinical training.

West Virginia University’s Experimental Rocketry team overcame near catastrophic setbacks to capture second place in the 10,000 foot-launch category at the second annual Spaceport America Cup. The event, which was held on June 19-23, near Las Cruces, New Mexico, hosts student rocketry teams from all over the world to launch solid, liquid, and hybrid rockets to target altitudes of 10,000 and 30,000 feet while carrying a minimum of 8.8 pounds of payload.

An incoming freshman who found his career path while taking care of his grandfather is the first recipient of the Jim and Gerry Cox Endowed Academic Scholarship. Bradley Bordelon, who moved to West Virginia from Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina and a recent Nicholas County High School graduate, is a direct admit in West Virginia University’s nursing program; he plans to minor in Spanish.

Through a new Scholar in Residence program at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Douglas Myers, an associate professor in the WVU School of Public Health, will serve as a primary liaison between the School and several local, regional and state partners. As a “guest researcher” with NIOSH, Myers will coordinate opportunities for faculty, students and researchers to collaborate and share ideas.
