The West Virginia University Center for Excellence in STEM Education, WV Forward and national manufacturing innovation institute Lightweight Innovations for Tomorrow, will celebrate the top two schools of West Virginia’s inaugural MakerMinded competition Aug. 23 at Tygarts Valley Middle/High School and Sept. 6 at Cabell Midland High School.
The West Virginia Business Hall of Fame will posthumously honor coal industry billionaire and philanthropist Chris Cline and three other state business leaders who have led widespread growth. The 2019 Hall of Fame class are Bill Bayless, chief executive officer of American Campus Communities Inc.; Judy K. West Virginia University researcher Mariette Barbier is working to preserve the pertussis vaccines’ effectiveness, even as the bacteria adapt. The National Institutes of Health has awarded her $2.6 million, over five years, for the project.
Dr. James P. Griffith and his wife Marla have established the Dr. James P. and Marla R. Griffith Mountaineer Medical Scholar program. A $20,000 commitment, the scholarship will be awarded to a student who chooses to further his or her education on the West Virginia University Health Sciences Charleston Campus, with preference given to those from West Virginia and/or Roane County and who have an interest in internal medicine and/or psychiatry.

According to Cyberseek.org, there are nearly 1,000 available jobs in the cybersecurity field in West Virginia. Nationwide, there are more than 313,000 open positions. With the aid of a $1 million award from the National Science Foundation, the Lane Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering hopes to prepare students to help meet the demand for these cybersecurity roles.
