Five West Virginia University women have been awarded the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to teach English abroad next year. All the winners are from West Virginia.

In a weekend of commencement events May 9-12, West Virginia University’s nearly 4,600 graduates will hear from a host of speakers whose pasts have earned them a Pulitzer Prize, an Emmy, a spot as a cyber-security top cop — and one whose career has begun before she leaves middle school.

This year’s Bucklew Scholars are eager to embark on a new journey at West Virginia University where they can fully immerse themselves in rigorous academics, multidisciplinary research, travel abroad and University tradition.

Two West Virginia University Honors College students will have an intensive cultural experience this summer as recipients of the highly competitive U.S. Department of State’s Critical Language Scholarship.

The four finalists vying for the title to represent the student body as the 67th West Virginia University Mountaineer Mascot come from a variety of academic backgrounds and are involved in an array of extra-curricular activities. All West Virginia natives, they will compete wearing buckskins and carrying the rifle in a cheer-off held during the men’s basketball game vs. Kansas State at 9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18, in the WVU Coliseum.

A student entrepreneur at West Virginia University will learn how to grow his business when he studies in Hong Kong as a Gilman Scholar. Demitrus Jones, a junior majoring in entrepreneurship and innovation in the John Chambers College of Business and Economics, will attend Hong Kong Baptist University in the spring semester.

After more than 40 years of experience in higher education leadership within the WVU system, Gerald Lang will retire as West Virginia University Institute of Technology’s interim campus president, effective Jan. 1.
