A weekend of Homecoming activities at West Virginia University culminated Saturday (Oct. 2) with the naming of Raimah Hossain and Kylie A. Parker as the 2021 Homecoming Royalty, marking the start of a new tradition at the University. The 2021 WVU Alumni Association Homecoming and Alumni Service Awards were also presented. The announcements were made during the half-time ceremony at Saturday’s Homecoming football game against Texas Tech.

Rough roads and decreasing pavement quality drive up vehicle crash rates and slow down average vehicle speeds, posing major concerns for motorists and highlighting the importance of public transportation spending, West Virginia University economists have concluded.

The WVU Alumni Association will honor individuals who truly embody what it means to be a Mountaineer— the winners of the 2021 West Virginia University Homecoming and Alumni Service Awards— over a weekend of festivities that also celebrates the accomplishments of alumni around the globe.

Alumni near and far will return to Morgantown this weekend (Oct. 1-2) to reminisce and embrace new traditions while honoring the old in celebration of West Virginia University’s 2021 Homecoming.

This year’s West Virginia University Campus Read selection, “The Line Becomes a River: Dispatches from the Border” by Francisco Cantú, prods readers to consider timely, complex views on migration, law enforcement, politics and more, as Mountaineers continue to take on big issues and ask tough questions.

Through a nearly $50,000 grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission’s Partnerships for Opportunity and Workforce and Economic Revitalization Initiative, a team from WVU Extension Service, WVU Chambers College of Business & Economics, Morris L. Hayhurst LaunchLab, and the West Virginia Public Education Collaborative is developing a strategic plan to encourage and support youth entrepreneurship in West Virginia.

Six people, including two former West Virginia University presidents, will be honored Friday (Sept. 10) for their loyalty and service to the University as they are inducted into the Order of Vandalia.

Ascend West Virginia, the nation’s premiere talent attraction and retention program, today announced its inaugural class will soon pack their bags for Morgantown, the program’s first host city. Founded by West Virginia native Brad D. Smith and his wife Alys, Ascend will provide these pioneers more than $20,000 in incentives—and a path to "Almost Heaven."

Two decades after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, members of West Virginia University’s Army ROTC and Air Force ROTC will stand vigil in shifts for 24 hours, as is tradition, to mark the 9/11 anniversary at the downtown campus memorial site. It is among several planned events to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the attacks.

Just like the COVID-19 vaccine protects against contracting the contagious virus, the collective elements of self-efficacy, optimism, hope and resiliency helps inoculate employees from the negative effects of working through a pandemic, according to a new West Virginia University study.
