West Virginia University is partnering with the Virginia Community College System to offer expanded higher education opportunities to prospective students from Virginia.
“Many students from Virginia have already found a place to call home with us at WVU and this partnership will encourage others to become Mountaineers,” President Michael T. Benson said during a Wednesday (Dec. 3) announcement at the Mountainlair.
“As West Virginia’s land-grant, R1, flagship university, we offer the kinds of experiences — inside and outside of classrooms — that can change lives for the better.”
The goal of the six-year partnership agreement is to build relationships between WVU and the 23 community colleges that make up the Virginia Community College System, encouraging students to potentially advance their education in the Mountain State.
“We’re excited to partner with West Virginia University to create a new guaranteed admission agreement that will provide a streamlined path for Virginia Community College graduates to continue their studies at WVU,” said Felicia Ganther, senior vice chancellor for academic and workforce programs at the Virginia Community College System.
“We know many of our students are keenly interested in programs offered at WVU. The agreement will boost access for our students by ensuring that credits transfer seamlessly, providing more flexibility for students to explore more pathways for their future success. This is a win-win for WVU and the VCCS.”
The WVU-VCCS partnership is designed to create pipelines to more than 40 WVU System majors through the VCCS common curriculum for all institutions, with additional opportunities among the individual members.
Since a high percentage of community college students are first-generation college students, the partnership also supports the University’s goal of opening doors to more of those students for four-year degrees.
Additionally, high school students who are taking classes through VCCS for college credit will have an advantage through dual enrollment that will be accepted at WVU, allowing students to complete some coursework before enrolling at the University.
The agreement takes effect immediately.
