The women's basketball team will host local middle and elementary schools for its nonconference game against Bryant on Nov. 15 as part of the program's first Education Day. Tipoff is set for 10 a.m. inside the WVU Coliseum.

The West Virginia University LaunchLab kicked off the 2018 Fall semester with its first Welcome Back Pitch & Showcase. Participating students presented a two-minute pop-up pitch, highlighting a problem and solution that apply to one of West Virginia Forward’s three main areas of focus: business, education or human capital. Students’ pitches included specific ideas on how we can bring more manufacturing jobs to the state, advance educational opportunities to students to retain talent in West Virginia – particularly among underrepresented populations – and create more jobs.

West Virginia University students in the fashion, dress and merchandising program will benefit thanks to a new scholarship established by program alumna and a textiles industry entrepreneur, Amy Bircher. The Amy Bircher and MMI Textiles Scholarship is an endowed fund that will support FDM students who show strong academic promise.

WVU is among the first to receive National Science Foundation awards for the INCLUDES Alliances. The WVU Center for Excellence in STEM Education will provide the central coordination of the research efforts across the five partnering entities in our Alliance.

West Virginia University Extension Service is helping local farmers and agribusiness owners navigate new safety regulations and procedures while providing education and training to increase consumer safety from these foodborne illnesses. Teaming up with the West Virginia Department of Agriculture and West Virginia State University, WVU Extension Service is offering a series of Food Safety Modernization Act training sessions for fruit and vegetable growers, as well as others interested in learning about produce safety.

WVU will open the regular season on Friday, Nov. 9 at home against Buffalo. Six days earlier, the Mountaineers will play its lone exhibition game on Saturday, Nov. 3 against Alderson Broaddus. The non-conference home schedule is highlighted by Pitt's first visit to the WVU Coliseum since 2012 and three teams (Buffalo, Rider and Jacksonville State) who advanced to postseason play in 2017-18.

West Virginia University researcher Robert Bossarte has received a $13.3-million award from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute to compare three treatment strategies for rural depressed patients: antidepressants alone; antidepressants combined with unguided cognitive behavior therapy provided online; and antidepressants combined with guided online cognitive behavior therapy.

The Office of the Provost at West Virginia University welcomed its fourth class of Academic Leadership Fellows this summer, giving nine tenured faculty members the opportunity to strengthen their leadership skills and gain direct experience in academic administration.

Software plays a vital role in supporting scientific communities. Yanfang (Fanny) Ye, assistant professor of computer science and electrical engineering at West Virginia University, has been awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation in support of her work to enhance security for modern software programming cyberinfrastructure. The award comes with $649,156 in funding over a three-year period.

Thanks to West Virginia University’s growing commitment to campus tree care and an ongoing collaboration between the Davis College of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Design and Facilities Management, WVU Evansdale is now home to a newly crowned champion – the largest paperbark maple in the state. The 24-foot “State Champion” is the first of its kind to be nominated to the West Virginia Big Tree Program.
