The West Virginia University Office of the Provost announced today that the Teaching and Learning Commons will be realigning with WVU Online under the leadership of Dean Keith Bailey. As part of this move, Bailey will also be named the assistant provost for teaching and learning. Tracey Beckley, current executive director of the TLC, will become the assistant dean for teaching and learning. This expanded role will encompass online program planning as well as continued growth of services offered by the TLC.

“We’ve taken a close look at our organization and identified two talented people who are ready to take their units in bold new directions,” said WVU Provost Joyce McConnell. “By re-aligning our Teaching and Learning Commons more closely with WVU Online, we are fostering the existing natural collaboration between those units. I am also excited to name both Keith and Tracey to new roles and see the innovative things they do next.”

Through WVU Online, the university currently offers more than 30 degrees, 20 minors and 8 professional certificate programs to 3,300 fully online students from around the world. The unit also offers continuing education courses for professionals and serves as the coordinating unit for WVU’s summer course offerings. Additionally, just last month, WVU Online championed the launch of the university’s first-ever Winter Intersession, offering 13 3-credit online courses to current students. More than 280 students enrolled.

The TLC provides teaching support and resources for faculty, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows at WVU. The TLC has extensive expertise with instructional best practices, including curriculum design, course development, assessment and technology integration.

“I’ve been privileged to work closely with Tracey and her team in the TLC since I joined WVU in 2016,” Bailey said. “I am really excited that we will be formally joining forces so we can continue to explore how to work together to offer the best learning experiences across all delivery methods.”

McConnell confirmed that the organizational and title changes announced today are effective immediately.
