The Edwin J. and Naomi F. Morgan Medical Scholarship has been established in memory of Edwin James Morgan, MD.

The $50,000 scholarship has been established by Morgan’s brother and sister-in-law, Raymond F. Morgan, MD, and his wife, Sue Ann Morgan, benefiting the School of Medicine at West Virginia University.

The scholarship will be awarded to a medical student who displays academic merit and financial need, and someone who may have similar qualities to Dr. Morgan—humble, charming, brilliant and committed to helping others.

“We established this scholarship to help WVU medical students aspire to give compassionate medical care, to have a love of learning and teaching, and to optimize their full leadership potential, much like Edwin J. Morgan, MD, demonstrated throughout his long and enduring commitment to the WVU School of Medicine,” Raymond and Sue Ann Morgan said.

Edwin Morgan arrived in Morgantown in 1964 where he began an internship in Internal Medicine at WVU. Following his service in the Air Force as a flight surgeon, he completed his residency in medicine and served as chief resident.

While his occupational lung disease fellowship was served in Cardiff, Wales, he spent the majority of his medical career at WVU and became the director of then University Health Service in 1973.

Throughout his time at WVU as a professor, Morgan was published in numerous medical journals, was often consulted for his medical expertise, and was committed to teaching students and residents. He also established numerous educational and clinical programs that benefited WVU students.

Morgan passed away on Oct. 19 at the age of 80. A memorial service for him will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday (Dec. 2) at St. John University Parish.
