The WVU Extension Service is a wide and multi-faceted organization, and with this comes the need for faculty and staff from all over the state to highlight their local efforts and partnerships that address substance misuse to the cohesive group to inform, inspire and collaborate with their peers.
West Virginia University expert Omar Abdul-Aziz has done extensive research on how climate, sea level and land-use changes affect flooding in coastal watersheds. Abdul-Aziz believes the key to disaster mitigation is accurately forecasting the damage caused by destructive winds, sweeping storm surges and devastating freshwater flooding often associated with massive hurricanes like Florence. He has developed hydrologic models to predict rainfall-fed freshwater flooding in large-scale coastal basins during extreme climate events.
West Virginia University's Appalachian Prison Book Project will host Walk for Justice on Saturday. APBP is a local nonprofit that sends free books to people incarcerated in six states and facilitates book clubs in a federal prison in West Virginia.

WVU offers two events to address suicide prevention this week.
Cadets will conduct a 24-hour vigil in the quad in front of the WVU Main Library to commemorate the 17th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks on the United States. Shifts of Cadets will continually march around the library quad in memory of the events, which resulted in the Global War on Terrorism including Operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom. In the past 18 years, dozens of WVU ROTC grads have served honorably overseas in support of these missions.
