West Virginia University Police have arrested a man they suspect of brandishing a knife on Belmar Avenue Wednesday night (March 10) near, but not on the Morgantown campus. The University issued a WVU Alert that night in response to the incident.
West Virginia University President Gordon Gee shared with the University community a letter he wrote to the West Virginia State Senate addressing potential campus carry bills that would allow guns on college campuses.
West Virginia University Police issued an Alert at 8:45 p.m. on Wednesday, March 10, after a man was reported with a knife near, but not on, the Morgantown campus.The suspect, described as a shirtless Black man wearing khaki pants, was last seen on Fife Street. Morgantown Police joined UPD in responding to the report as the public was asked to avoid the area. Officers canvassed the neighborhood but by 9:30 p.m. had not located a suspect and issued an Alert that it was safe to return to the area. WVU students, employees and the general public are encouraged to remain vigilant.

Thursday was previously designated as a non-instructional date on the academic calendar. As a result, no classes were scheduled. West Virginia University announced Thursday, Jan. 21 that University Police Chief William P. “W.P.” Chedester II has decided to step down from his role due to medical reasons. Chedester will continue to serve University Police as a lieutenant within the department. Phil Scott, who previously served as deputy chief within University Police, will serve as interim chief.
