WVU’s latest NSF CAREER Award winner, Assistant Professor of Geography Aaron Maxwell, will use big data to map what the surface of West Virginia looked like over the last 60 years.

West Virginia University’s fall 2021 semester begins on Wednesday, Aug. 18. Distinguished by high standards for academics and a passion for discovery and to serve their state and others, five rising freshmen have been named to the 2021-22 cohort of West Virginia University Foundation Scholars, the highest academic scholarship the University awards.

In mid-April, West Virginia University students were given the opportunity to participate in an international, multi-agency cyber competition, Locked Shields. This out-of-classroom exercise enabled students to use the skills they’ve learned in everything from engineering to cybersecurity, media and law in one of the most complex, technical, live-fire challenges in the world.

West Virginia University will resume administration of Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen COVID-19 vaccine based on the recent recommendation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration.

It’s been 10 years since former West Virginia University Emergency Medicine resident Greg Seftick died in an avalanche at Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park. Shortly after the tragic accident, the WVU Foundation worked with Seftick’s family and the School of Medicine to establish the Dr. Gregory Seftick Wilderness Medicine Fund. Now, Seftick’s family has partnered with the Foundation again to launch a crowdfunding effort that builds upon his legacy.

Patients with substance use disorder will be able to better connect with emergency department-initiated treatment programs at participating hospitals throughout the state, thanks to a partnership between West Virginia University Office of Health Affairs, Marshall University and the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.

With a boost from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in the amount of $1 million, the Brownfields Assistance Center at West Virginia University will continue its mission to empower communities to transform brownfields — property hindered from redevelopment or reuse due to the presence or perceived presence of a hazardous substance or contaminant.

Jessica Wilkerson, associate professor of history, has been named a 2021 Carnegie Fellow and is only the second WVU researcher to earn the prestigious designation.
