Maryanne Reed, who transformed West Virginia University’s journalism school into an exemplar of modern media training as the Reed College of Media, was named provost and vice president for academic affairs of the University on Wednesday (April 17).

WVU researcher finds sexism ‘pervasive in agriculture faculty’

A West Virginia University researcher has found that sexism is still pervasive among agriculture faculty in spite of gains made in the last 15 years. Haley Rosson, assistant professor of agriculture in the Davis College of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Design and Extension education, said behaviors include toxic work environments, unhealthy competition, inappropriate interactions and policy violations.

Fentanyl deaths up 122 percent in West Virginia, say WVU researchers

West Virginia ranks first for fentanyl-related deaths, but it also leads the nation in a more optimistic way: its medical examiners pinpoint the cause of every drug-related death, and the relevant facts populate a unique statewide database. An interdisciplinary research team—involving the WVU School of Pharmacy, the WVU School of Public Health and the West Virginia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner—analyzed data and found that fentanyl deaths are up 122 percent in the state.

WVU doctoral student wins National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship

Harrison “Henry” Loh, a doctoral student conducting research in materials science and engineering at West Virginia University, is the recipient of a 2019 National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. The award will allow the Wheeling native to expand his research in the area of flexible technologies and devices.

WVU Extension Service partners with the Polaris Foundation to improve ATV safety

It’s a common sight in much of West Virginia — ATVs and UTVs rushing up secondary roads, riding along forest trails and running across the hills. Given their popularity, the West Virginia University Extension Service is teaming up with the Polaris Foundation to improve safe riding practices and help reduce injuries and accidents. This initiative is of importance as West Virginia leads the nation in the number of ATV- and UTV-related deaths per capita with rates eight times the national average.
