John Renton, professor emeritus of geology at West Virginia University, was not only the first person in his family to go to college. He was also one of only two students from his hometown of Beadling, Pennsylvania to enroll in college.

A scholarship from the J. Edgar Hoover Foundation in spring 2016, part of a first-of-its-kind philanthropic gift to the Department of Forensic and Investigative Science made a "major impact" on Eberly College of Arts and Science students.

West Virginia University has raised $301,425 through the 34th annual United Way Campaign, which wrapped up Nov. 11.
