Jerry West has earned yet another prestigious award. President Donald Trump has announced the 81-year-old West will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Armed with a degree in international studies from West Virginia University, Lauren Headley plans to use what she’s learned in the Peace Corps. The first WVU graduate of the Peace Corps Prep Program, Headley, who is from Myersville, Maryland, has applied for a Peace Corps volunteer position in Senegal.

Brendan Wood, a 2019 graduate of the West Virginia University College of Law, has been awarded a post-graduate legal fellowship from Equal Justice Works that will allow him to offer legal assistance to West Virginians recovering from addiction as they work towards greater socioeconomic stability.

West Virginia University President Gordon Gee’s knack for risk-taking is generally well-known, as is his encouragement to students to live lives based on their passions, not their fears. In his weekend (May 10-12) commencement addresses to WVU graduates across campus, Gee urged future risk balanced on what they’ve learned.

West Virginia University's College of Creative Arts hosted Talent West Virginia, a statewide musical talent contest and fundraiser April 6. Funds raised through the competition will support West Virginia Public Theatre and its mission to bring the arts to all West Virginians.

Maryanne Reed, who transformed West Virginia University’s journalism school into an exemplar of modern media training as the Reed College of Media, was named provost and vice president for academic affairs of the University on Wednesday (April 17).

Through the Community Leadership Academy, leaders come together to enhance their skills on a variety of topics aimed at helping their communities. Topics range from education and volunteerism to financial management and economic development. David C. Hardesty Jr., WVU president emeritus, will share his leadership experiences and tips with attendees as the keynote address (May 2).
