West Virginia University’s College of Education and Human Services and Center for Excellence in STEM Education are set to implement a new project that will promote the support and development of mathematics teachers in West Virginia. The one-year project, “Mountaineer Mathematics Master Teachers: A Networked Improvement Community Building Capacity for Mathematics Teacher Leadership in West Virginia,” will be funded by a $75,000 grant from the National Science Foundation’s Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship program.

Tackling four areas of concern for girls and young women in West Virginia— diversity/inclusion, health, STEM and education— West Virginia University and the Girl Scouts of the Black Diamond Council hosted “State of the Girl,” an event centered around the landmark study of the same name conducted by the Girl Scouts of the USA.

West Virginia University has conducted a review of its fraternity and sorority system and the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life announced recommendations to strengthen oversight of the social and social-professional fraternities on campus.

A total of 4,120 students graduated from the University in May. A total of 3,532 students were named to the Dean’s list for spring 2018. Those on the Dean’s list received a 3.5 GPA or higher. A total of 2,171 students were named to the President’s list after receiving a perfect 4.0 grade point average.

West Virginia University’s dean of the College of Education and Human Services, Dr. Gypsy Denzine, has been appointed senior vice provost for faculty affairs at Virginia Commonwealth University, effective Aug. 6.

This class of more than 4,450 is likely a generation prepared for enacting “vital change,” having earned a University record 10 Fulbright Scholarships, two Boren Scholarships, an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship and a Truman Scholarship. Eight students were named to the Order of Augusta, WVU’s most prestigious student honor.
