Mylan and West Virginia University join forces to inspire West Virginia youth through STEM-CARE

This class of more than 4,450 is likely a generation prepared for enacting “vital change,” having earned a University record 10 Fulbright Scholarships, two Boren Scholarships, an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship and a Truman Scholarship. Eight students were named to the Order of Augusta, WVU’s most prestigious student honor.

The West Virginia Brownfields Assistance Centers at West Virginia University and Marshall have helped six municipalities and organizations secure $2.8 million in grants from the United States Environmental Protection Agency to assess, clean up and redevelop environmentally contaminated sites across the Mountain State.

Renowned West Virginia novelist Ann Pancake leads the list of honorary degree recipients when West Virginia University sends more than 4,450 graduates into the world the weekend of May 11-13 as commencement ceremonies take place in three venues for 13 colleges and schools. Of those graduates, 3,009 have earned their undergraduate degrees or certificates, 1,110 their master’s degrees and 360 have earned their doctorates.

West Virginia University English professor Stephanie Foote has been named one of the 2018 Andrew Carnegie Fellows for her work related to cultural production in and around the Anthropocene, the geological epoch in which human activity has had a global effect on Earth’s climate and environment.

Edward Sabolsky, associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, and Fernando Lima, assistant professor of chemical engineering, have been awarded the 2018 Faculty Award for Distinction in Mentoring Undergraduates in Research. Both awardees are faculty in the Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources.

Four academic advisers at West Virginia University have been awarded the Nicholas Evans Award for Excellence in Advising. This annual award, established by the Office of the Provost, is given in honor of Dr. Nicholas Evans, a lifelong proponent of the importance of undergraduate advising at WVU.

Eight students who collectively “reflect West Virginia University’s mission and vision” have been honored with the Order of Augusta, WVU’s most prestigious student honor.

Shelia S. Price, associate dean for admissions, recruitment and access and diagnostic sciences professor at the West Virginia University School of Dentistry has been awarded West Virginia University’s 2018 Neil S. Bucklew Social Justice Award.

Nearly 70 West Virginia University students and faculty members from across campus will showcase their innovative ideas, cutting-edge inventions, working prototypes and unique business ventures at the inaugural WVU IDEA Hub Demo Day Thursday, April 19. The teams will compete for prizes determined by those who attend the all-day, university-wide event.
