In response to the surging, global demand for cybersecurity professionals, the West Virginia University Board of Governors Tuesday (March 6) approved both undergraduate and graduate academic programs in cybersecurity. The approvals by the WVU board set into motion collaborative and independent curricula by the Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources and the College of Business and Economics starting in the fall semester of this year.

Continuing its work implementing changes allowed by the “freedom agenda” adopted by the 2017 Legislature, the West Virginia University Board of Governors issued a notice of proposed rulemaking Tuesday (March 6) for an amended set of academic rules and one additional faculty rule.

Lesley Cottrell, director of the Center for Excellence in Disabilities in the Health Sciences Center at West Virginia University, has been named the recipient of the 2017-2018 James and Karen Caveney Alumni Association Faculty Excellence Award.

Director of Athletics/Associate Vice-President Shane Lyons has been named to the NCAA Division I Council. The Division I Council is a high-level group responsible for the day-to-day decision-making for Division I. The council is comprised of practitioners who work daily in Division I athletics, and it has primary legislative authority for Division I.

Senior guard Jevon Carter and sophomore forward Sagaba Konate headline WVU's awards for the 2018 Phillips 66 All-Big 12 Men's Basketball teams. Carter was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year for the second-straight season and is just the third player from a major conference (first Big 12 player) to be named to the All-Defensive Team all four years of his career. He was a unanimous choice for the All-Big 12 First Team and the Big 12 All-Defensive Team.

Emma Harrison found her passion for expanding educational opportunities for imprisoned people in a West Virginia University class she shared with incarcerated men. That passion has led to her selection as a finalist for the prestigious Truman Scholarship, the premier award for those who are pursuing careers in public service.

Law students from across the country will be in Morgantown March 8-10 for the eighth annual National Energy and Sustainability Moot Court Competition hosted by the West Virginia University College of Law.

West Virginia University’s Global Supply Chain Management program has not be around a long time, but you would never know that from the accolades it has received in its short life. Those accolades kept right on coming this past weekend, as a student supply chain competition team from the WVU College of Business and Economics was named divisional champion of the international Supply Chain Skills Challenge on Feb. 24 at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah.

Antar Jutla, assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering at West Virginia University, has earned a prestigious CAREER award from the National Science Foundation for his research on how extreme events and enhanced climatic variability impact the emergence of water-borne pathogens that cause infection in humans. The award comes with nearly $500,000 in funding over a five-year period.

Paul Cassak, associate professor of Physics and Astronomy in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences has been named West Virginia University’s 2017-2018 Benedum Distinguished Scholar in Physical Sciences and Technology. This designation is intended to recognize and reward WVU faculty who exemplify distinction in research, scholarship or creative activity.
