Call it a slam dunk: West Virginia University is scoring new opportunities for students to pursue and complete their degrees with a $5 million gift from Steve Ballmer, chairman of the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers, and his wife, Connie, honoring late Mountaineer great Jerry West. The announcement coincides with Jerry West Day, a celebration of West’s memory and legacy at the WVU men’s basketball game Saturday (Jan. 18) versus Iowa State.

The West Virginia University Hearts of Gold Program will play a key role in setting new industry standards for service dog training and support with the help of a more than $590,000 award from the Wounded Warrior Service Dog Grant Program.

The program is open to resident undergraduate students across the West Virginia University System — including at WVU Morgantown, WVU Institute of Technology and WVU Potomac State College — with a family adjusted gross income of $65,000 or less who annually complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

But after she graduates in May, she now has her sights set on law school and pursuing a career in intellectual property law.
