Memorial fund established by Coach Huggins advances West Virginia cancer care

WVU Men’s Basketball Coach Bob Huggins launched the Norma Mae Huggins Cancer Research Fund after his mother lost her battle with colon cancer in 2003. To date, the fund has raised about $5 million to support clinical research trials for cancer patients in West Virginia. But, to the patients and physicians impacted by those funds, the value is priceless.

WVU Medicine Children’s, Nexstar partner for Mediathon on Nov. 13

WVU Medicine Children’s, the state’s only Children’s Miracle Network Hospital, has partnered with Nexstar Media Group to host a Mediathon on Wednesday, Nov. 13, in conjunction with the WVU Day of Giving to raise funds that will help patients and families in need of life-changing care.

On Saturday, Robert Parsons, a 61-year-old male from Chesapeake, Ohio, got a new lease on life when surgeons at the West Virginia University Heart and Vascular Institute and the WVU Medicine Transplant Alliance performed West Virginia’s first heart transplant.

WVU receives national award for excellence in military pain medicine

West Virginia University’s Schools of Medicine and Dentistry and the WVU Medicine Center for Integrative Pain Management’s efforts to improve military pain medicine care for soldiers in the field were recognized by a national award for excellence in military pain medicine. This is the first time the award was given to an institution rather than an individual.
