WVU names 2019 Foundation Scholars

Five of the state’s best and brightest senior high school students who had their choice of some of the nation’s most esteemed colleges have chosen to attend West Virginia University as 2019 Foundation Scholars, the highest academic scholarship the University awards.

WVU student arrested for making terroristic threats

Acting on a tip, University Police arrested Cheickna Kagnassy, a 21-year-old freshman pre-business major from Columbia, Maryland, at his residence in Vandalia Hall Wednesday evening, Deputy Chief Phil Scott said. Scott said a concerned citizen notified police that Kagnassy had spoken of carrying out a “shooting spree,” then committing suicide. He said no weapons were found at Kagnassy’s residence.

West Virginia University announces new leadership at Reed, Statler colleges

Diana Martinelli, who has played a critical role in adapting and expanding curriculum at West Virginia University’s Reed College of Media, was named dean of the school Wednesday (May 1). Martinelli, who has served as associate dean since 2012, succeeds Maryanne Reed, recently named WVU’s next provost and vice president for academic affairs. Also, Earl Scime was appointed interim dean of the Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources, following the decision by current dean Gene Cilento to return to the faculty.

Four WVU professors awarded Fulbright grants

Nicholas Bowman, Jay Krehbiel, Tamba M'Bayo and Angel Tuninetti, all from the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences, have received grants from the U.S. Fulbright Scholar Program to conduct research abroad.

Wilson to retire after 26 years as associate provost for academic personnel

After more than 40 years at West Virginia University, Associate Provost for Academic Personnel C.B. Wilson plans to retire effective Sept. 1. Wilson began his tenure at WVU as chair and professor of Music in 1977 and took on progressive leadership roles in the College of Creative Arts, first as associate dean and later as interim dean of the College.

Grier, Cajuste among several Mountaineers on their way to the NFL

Quarterback Will Grier was chosen by the hometown Carolina Panthers with the 100th overall pick, and then Yodny Cajuste heard his name called one spot later when he was drafted by the New England Patriots. David Sills V has signed a rookie free agent contract with the Buffalo Bills. Wide receiver Gary Jennings Jr. and tight end Trevon Wesco went in succession with selections 120 and 121 of the fourth round to the Seattle Seahawks and New York Jets respectively. Linebacker David Long Jr. was taken two rounds later when the Tennessee Titans drafted him with the 188th pick. Safety Dravon Askew-Henry signed with the hometown Pittsburgh Steelers, defensive tackle Kenny Bigelow Jr. inked a rookie free agent deal with the New Orleans Saints and Toyous Avery Jr. signed with the Seattle Seahawks, making it nine players from this year's WVU draft class now affiliated with NFL teams.
