Under the quiet surface of near-stilled campuses over the past year, West Virginia University researchers, faculty and administrators have scrambled to learn more about COVID-19 and mitigate its spread, calculated how to teach online and hybrid classes and figured out how to better ensure people on those campuses could remain safe from the virulent disease that has killed more than 500,000 U. S. citizens to date.

Alumni and friends of West Virginia University made over 5,000 gifts totaling $11.9 million Wednesday (March 3) during the University’s fourth Day of Giving, setting new records for the 24-hour online fundraising event held across the University system. The final numbers surpassed $11.3 million raised and over 4,000 gifts in 2019, the last time the event was held.

A partnership between West Virginia University and two major U.S. food corporations — Kroger Mid-Atlantic and Kraft Heinz — will supply The Rack: Student Food Pantry, allowing students to have affordable and nutritious meals.

The West Virginia University Board of Governors received reports Wednesday (Feb. 10) about the positive national attention surrounding the success of COVID-19 vaccination efforts across the State and supported by WVU.

West Virginia University alumnus George R. Farmer Jr. was a successful attorney who devoted his career to carrying on the giving tradition of one of West Virginia’s most celebrated benefactors. In doing so, he helped transform his alma mater and the Morgantown community through impactful philanthropic giving that will be remembered long beyond his passing Monday, at the age of 92.

An experienced academic leader and patent law expert has been selected as the next William J. Maier, Jr. Dean of the West Virginia University College of Law.

West Virginia University President Gordon Gee wrote to the University Community Friday (Jan. 8), noting that America’s democracy will prevail in spite of the violence in Washington, DC Wednesday (Jan. 6) and that this moment is a calling for WVU and institutions of higher education everywhere.

Not only do West Virginia University’s newest graduates have much to celebrate in a year that defied traditions and norms, as they enter the next phase of their lives, they are drawing strength from being tested and are instilled with the most critical skills for succeeding in the 21st century: adaptability, resilience and purpose.

West Virginia University President Gordon Gee called for transformation during Friday’s (Dec. 18) Board of Governors meeting, warning that across the country there is a loss of public trust and the perceived value of higher education has diminished.

Bringing together families, friends and fellow classmates from across the country and around the world to celebrate the August and December Classes of 2020, West Virginia University will host 14 online commencement ceremonies for the 2,680 graduates on Saturday, Dec.19.
