The amount in external funding for research and other sponsored programs at West Virginia University for fiscal year 2021 tops the previous year’s record by $8 million.

Based on the latest guidance from the U.S. Department of Education, West Virginia University will distribute $27,271,733 in emergency grants to eligible students during the 2021-22 academic year.

Students at the West Virginia University School of Dentistry will have the opportunity to conduct research that will enhance both their academic and professional careers through a philanthropic challenge in memory of pioneering West Virginia orthodontist Dr. William M. Jarrett.

Two $25,000 gifts to the West Virginia University School of Dentistry will help improve oral health care for patients in need and increase hands-on learning opportunities for the next generation of dentists and dental hygienists.

Following a year of missed milestones, celebrations and traditions, West Virginia University’s first in-person commencement ceremony since December 2019 ushered in a renewed sense of optimism for the nearly 4,500 graduates who walked across the stage to receive their diplomas in four ceremonies this weekend (May 15-16).

Retired United States Navy rear admiral and former chief of the U.S. Navy Dental Corps, Dr. Stephen Pachuta, has been appointed dean of West Virginia University’s School of Dentistry by Dr. Clay Marsh, vice president and executive dean for WVU Health Sciences.

West Virginia University graduates will return to in-person commencement ceremonies this May; and although some restrictions will be in place because of COVID-19, the celebrations will be no less memorable for the 4,499 who walk across the stage to receive their diplomas. Graduates from May, August and December 2020 are also eligible to participate in the exercises.

Eligible, degree-seeking students at any West Virginia University campus can receive emergency grants through the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund II, part of the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act. WVU will continue distributing its allotted $10,087,116 in emergency grants to students who qualify.

Dentistry students at West Virginia University will benefit from a generous gift made in honor of a late alumnus who launched a family legacy at the School of Dentistry.

Bringing together families, friends and fellow classmates from across the country and around the world to celebrate the August and December Classes of 2020, West Virginia University will host 14 online commencement ceremonies for the 2,680 graduates on Saturday, Dec.19.
