ORIGINAL RELEASE:

West Virginia University issued a WVU Alert Thursday (May 9) announcing the evacuation of Health Sciences Center-North following a localized gas leak.

“The evacuation is out of an abundance of caution and to allow utility crews to more efficiently address the situation,” said University Police Chief Sherry St. Clair.

Along with UPD, Hope Gas, WVU Environmental Health and Safety and Facilities Management were working to make repairs.

The gas leak was first identified in the early morning hours of Thursday (May 9).

At times, service was disrupted in the building, affecting activities and events.

Those who smelled gas in the area were being asked to submit reports to UPD at 304-293-3136.

A WVU Alert is part of the University's three-tiered emergency notification system.
