West Virginia University Police issued a Campus Warning following a motor vehicle theft in Lot 201 near the WVU College of Law that was reported Monday (Jan. 15) but may have occurred any time after Dec. 10.

University Police are searching for the stolen vehicle — a gold 2008 Hyundai Elantra with a Florida plate, BW79EK, that has a Flying WV sticker in the middle of the back window; an orange Area 201S sticker on the back window; and a right front tire that does not match the other three because it does not have a rim cover. The vehicle was last seen in Lot 201 before the holiday break.

WVU is committed to providing a safe campus for the protection of the University community. University officials remind students to always lock their doors and consider other personal safety tips, advice and services located at safety.wvu.edu and police.wvu.edu.

The following safety tips are designed to help avoid potential crime.

  • If you leave a vehicle or residence unattended for an extended period, consider asking someone to check-in on it periodically.
  • ALWAYS LOCK EXTERIOR DOORS, especially while you are away or not actively monitoring them. This includes your dorm, apartment, house and car doors.
  • Develop a routine to inspect locks on your doors, windows and other applicable areas to ensure they are working effectively and locked, especially at night.
  • Do not leave spare keys in places accessible to others.
  • If you lose your key or ID, report it immediately.
  • Anyone who believes they are in danger should immediately call 911.
  • If you witness a potentially dangerous situation or a crime, call 911 or WVUPD.
  • Download the WVU LiveSafe app.
  • If you encounter an emergency situation on campus, utilize the blue light emergency call system, if available.
