West Virginia University English professor Stephanie Foote has been named one of the 2018 Andrew Carnegie Fellows for her work related to cultural production in and around the Anthropocene, the geological epoch in which human activity has had a global effect on Earth’s climate and environment.
West Virginia University alumnus Mark Bowe will be the first to tell you he is passionate about heritage and history, something he and his team strive to preserve as they travel the country honoring pioneer-era craftsmanship on the popular DIY network show, Barnwood Builders.
The job fair will be open to the general public and will take place on May 1, from 7 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Erickson Alumni Center. The event originally was to focus on filling positions within WVU’s facilities operations; however, it now also will include faculty, staff and temporary positions in several functional areas across WVU and WVU Hospitals.
Edward Sabolsky, associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, and Fernando Lima, assistant professor of chemical engineering, have been awarded the 2018 Faculty Award for Distinction in Mentoring Undergraduates in Research. Both awardees are faculty in the Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources.
Beginning May 5, West Virginia University’s PRT will be closed for passenger service to continue with automatic train control modernization and to perform other maintenance and testing activities. It is anticipated that normal operations will resume Wednesday, Aug. 1.
WV KIDS COUNT, in partnership with WVU Medicine Children’s and the WVU Rockefeller School of Public Policy and Politics, released the second in a series of six issue briefs on the well-being of children and families in West Virginia. This issue brief, “Accounting for Enrollment Success and Considering the Challenges Ahead for Children’s Health Insurance,” credits West Virginia for its Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) outreach and enrollment efforts.
West Virginia University infectious disease expert Judith Feinberg, M.D., will participate in a briefing for members of Congress and their staffs on Capitol Hill Tuesday (April 24), at noon in the Congressional Visitor Center. Feinberg is the vice chair of the HIV Medicine Association and co-leader of a federally-funded project to reduce the incidence of infectious diseases in communities hard-hit by the opioid crisis.
Four academic advisers at West Virginia University have been awarded the Nicholas Evans Award for Excellence in Advising. This annual award, established by the Office of the Provost, is given in honor of Dr. Nicholas Evans, a lifelong proponent of the importance of undergraduate advising at WVU.
Building on the success of its undergraduate program, the West Virginia University Board of Governors has approved a graduate program in biomedical engineering. The program, which will award degrees at both the master’s and doctoral levels, will be offered in the Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources starting in the fall semester of this year.
West Virginia University Hospitality and Tourism Management students in the College of Business and Economics had the unique opportunity to experience real-world training in hotel management while helping the West Virginia Tourism Office find ways to increase business in state parks. The students analyzed revenue trends of lodging facilities in state parks across West Virginia to determine how best to regulate proper occupancy rates and pricing regimes.
