West Virginia University alumnus Nick Underwood has been flying into the eye of Hurricane Irma, the most powerful Atlantic Ocean hurricane in recorded history, to collect critical data about the storm and where it’s headed. Underwood, a native of Beaver, graduated from WVU in 2014 with a degree in aerospace engineering. He has spent the last year working with the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration’s Aircraft Operations Center.

West Virginia University biologists Kevin Daly and Andrew Dacks are working to uncover the mystery of corollary discharge functions for the sense of smell. Funded by a four year, $1.4 million Air Force grant, Daly and Dacks are studying an animal with one of the most sensitive senses of smell—moths.

The Mountain State Business Index jumped 0.3 percent in August, marking the index’s 11th month-to-month gain over the last 13 months. Economists at West Virginia University said the MSBI has risen 1.3 percent on an annualized basis over the last six months and posted a 2.0 percent gain over its August 2016 reading, returning to its highest level since the second quarter of 2015.
Two West Virginia University Reed College of Media online graduate students have been awarded scholarships from the College's newly-established General IMC Scholarship Fund. Longtime supporters of West Virginia University, alumni Curtis H. “Hank” Barnette and his wife, Joanne Harner Barnette, are donating to the University the Harner-Barnette farm which includes 10 acres of land outside Morgantown, a house and related buildings on the property with furnishings, and farm implements.
