West Virginia University Police recognized for safety efforts

West Virginia University Department of Police and Emergency Management is ranked ninth in the nation among 4,706 colleges and universities for its campus safety initiatives.

The Safe Campus Top 25 list was announced Monday, recognizing UPD’s accomplishments in improving university campus safety including a partnership with Morgantown Police Department to become the primary responder to the Coop Zone. It was were also recognized for co-sponsoring an emergency management drill which involved the university community, the National Guard, Department of Corrections, Department of Health and other state and local agencies. 

"WVU has made exceptional efforts to ensure the safety of their students, faculty, staff and university community," said Linda Shaw, director of Safe Campus, a national organization dedicated to improving the safety of U.S. colleges and universities.

“It is great to be recognized for our efforts to keep our campus community safe by providing high quality services and being listed as one of the top 25 universities that are making a difference by Campus Safety is another honor for the team and our campus,” said Chief of Police Bob Roberts.

The National Council for Home Safety and Security has also recognized WVU this year for being among the top 40 safest campuses in the United States. Additionally, WVU Police received its highest ranking -13th - in The Security 500 Benchmarking Survey, a validation of the department’s commitment to keeping WVU safe and secure through community policing and prevention. The department has finished in the top 20 in the rankings for four consecutive years.
