West Virginia University’s Police Department will be examined for reaccreditation by the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement on September 11.  The IACLEA will examine all aspects of University Police Department’s policy and procedures, management, operation and support services, Chief Bob Roberts announced today (Aug. 18).

“Accreditation shows that our department complies with the current best practices in law enforcement,” Roberts said. “Verification by the team that West Virginia University Police Department meets IACLEA’s state-of-the-art standards is part of a voluntary process to keep accreditation – a highly prized recognition of campus public safety professional excellence.”

The WVU Police Department has to comply with 215 standards in order to achieve reaccredited status.

University members, agency employees and the public are invited to offer comments by calling 304.581.1993 Sept. 11 between the hours of 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Comments will be taken by the Assessment Team. This phone line will only be active during this time.

Telephone comments must address the department’s ability to comply with IACLEA’s standards. The IACLEA Accreditation Standards Manual is available on the IACLEA website www.iaclea.org.

Anyone wishing to submit written comments about the WVU Police Department’s ability to comply with the standards for accreditation may send them to IACLEA Accreditation, 342 North Main Street, West Hartford, CT 06117-2507.

The Accreditation Manager for University Police is Lt. Chad Barker.

“The Assessment Team is composed of experienced campus law enforcement professionals from out-of-state,” Barker said. “The assessors will review written materials, interview individuals and inspect facilities where compliance can be witnessed. The assessors are Assistant Chief Robert C. Fey (Ret.), Team Leader; and Sgt. Kevin Roberto (Ret.).”

Once the assessors complete their review of the department, they will report back to IACLEA, which will then decide if the department is to be granted accredited status, Barker said.

Accreditation is for four years, during which the department must submit annual reports attesting to continued compliance with those standards under which it was initially accredited.
