The Civil Rights movement led by Martin Luther King, Jr. is now being carried forward by a new generation. Marjorie Fuller, director of the Center for Black Culture and Research at West Virginia University, and Meshea Poore, vice president of WVU’s Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, believe that as the nation marks the 50th anniversary of King’s assassination, his work is more relevant now than ever.

The West Virginia Humanities Council and the WVU Reed College of Media will present “Path to the Pulitzer: Journalism and the Informed Citizen” April 4 at 7 p.m. in Ming Hsieh Hall. The panel presentation features two award-winning journalists: 2017 Pulitzer winner Eric Eyre of the Charleston Gazette-Mail and Eric Newhouse of Charleston who received a 2000 Pulitzer while with the Great Falls (Montana) Tribune.
Community leaders will have the opportunity to build networks with other leaders from various disciplines throughout the Mountain State. The annual West Virginia University Extension Service Community Leadership Academy conference boasts a comprehensive experience by providing education and motivation. The conference takes place April 11-13 at the Morgantown Marriott at Waterfront Place.
Participants will include experts in industry, government and higher education. Scientists from the WVU Davis College of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Design, Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources, Eberly College of Arts and Sciences, WVU Extension Service and the National Research Center for Coal and Energy will present results of studies ranging from mine drainage to surface and underground mining and reclamation techniques.
Social media users and their habits of sharing their personal information online are at the root of the recent Cambridge Analytica data mining scandal, according to a West Virginia University expert on management information systems. Once information has been freely shared, companies sell the information and others collect it, Stephane Collignon said.
Madelyn Dundon, a sophomore musical theatre major at WVU stars as Grace, a charismatic and riveting teenager with cancer. "Getting Grace" tells the story of what happens when Grace goes into a funeral home to learn about death, only to end up teaching the funeral director about life. A West Virginia University researcher has investigated how trolls on the subreddit "/r/The_Donald” organized to create pro-Trump campaigns on Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms. Saiph Savage, assistant professor of computer science and electrical engineering in the Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources, has worked with a team to investigate how political trolls produce collective action to create content and disrupt other communities.
