The Appalachian Justice Initiative and WVU Libraries will delve into the issue of mass incarceration through two events (Nov. 1 and Nov. 15) at West Virginia University.

“AJI is about recognizing and listening to the voices of all of our community members, including those most stigmatized, such as Appalachian prisoners and former offenders,” said Valena Beety, a founding member of AJI.


Journalist to address the failure of mass incarceration

Who: Sylvia Ryerson

What: Presentation exploring stereotypes and mass incarcerations.

Where: Downtown campus library’s Milano Reading Room

When: Nov. 15, 6 p.m.

Ryerson’s project, “Restoring Families: Overcoming Stereotypes and the Failure of Mass Incarceration,” will complement the visual perspective of The Divide, WVU Multimedia Producer and photojournalist Raymond Thompson’s exhibit of photographs on display in the Downtown Campus Library’s Atrium.
