The WVU Student Healthcare Alliance for Promoting Equality is hosting a series of events during LGBTQ+ Health Week (Nov. 1-8) to help students and health care professionals better understand health issues impacting the LGBTQ+ community.
Cervical cancer rates are higher among women in Appalachia due to a variety of factors ranging from health policy to biology. Electra Paskett’s research focuses on how healthcare interventions at the individual, physician, clinic, organization and community levels can impact cancer prevention, detection and treatment among underserved populations, including rural Appalachia.
A West Virginia University expert says the Murray Energy bankruptcy was “inevitable,” citing coal as no longer cost effective in energy production. “It’s a matter of economics,” according to James Van Nostrand, director of the WVU College of Law’s Center for Energy and Sustainable Development. Van Nostrand said numbers remain favorable for renewable energy projects over continuing to operate existing coal plants.

This year’s campus read “Educated: A Memoir” has inspired an entire podcast at West Virginia University. Geoffrey Hilsabeck, a visiting assistant professor in the Department of English and a community outreach fellow in the WVU Humanities Center, wanted to create this podcast so that his guests could reflect on the author’s story from their own perspective, and explore the similarities between this true story in rural Idaho and their personal experiences growing up in West Virginia.
For the past 32 years, crowds of elementary, middle and high school students accompanied by friends, teachers and guardians have gathered around the 11-story Engineering Sciences Building to watch hundreds of pumpkins, each weighing about 60 pounds, fall from its roof, hopefully not to their doom. The Pumpkin Drop is Friday (Oct. 25) from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. outside the Engineering Science Building on WVU’s Evansdale Campus.
West Virginia University Health Sciences faculty and students from more than 20 laboratories will hold a Lab Open House on Tuesday, October 22 from 1-3 p.m. at the WVU Health Sciences Center, Pylons/Learning Center Commons, 64 Medical Center Drive, Morgantown.
Last year, faculty from WVU Extension Service, WVU College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences, and WVU School of Public Health and West Virginia Prevention Research Center entered into a five-year contractual partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to make a group of West Virginia University employees’ dream of a healthier West Virginia come true. The Be Wild, Be Wonderful, Be Healthy project is a community-based project that aims to create local solutions for our state’s health-related challenges by supporting projects in Clay and McDowell counties that increase access to physical activity and healthy foods.
