Marcus Caldeira, a professional forward for Minnesota United FC, graduated in December 2025 with a degree in finance and an emphasis in investments. A Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, native and first-generation college student, Caldeira maintained a 4.0 GPA while completing rigorous coursework and establishing himself as one of the most accomplished student-athletes in the history of the WVU men’s soccer team.

In 2024, he became the first Mountaineer ever selected in the first round of the MLS SuperDraft, going 20th overall. Driven by a steadfast commitment to his education, he returned to WVU in 2025 to finish his degree and lead his team for a final season.

While widely recognized for his performance on the field, Caldeira considers his student leadership in the John Chambers College of Business and Economics to be among his most significant milestones — specifically leading his team to victory in the MegaCorp sales competition. Serving as the project coordinator and lead presenter, he spearheaded a winning three-state Chobani distribution strategy presented to a panel of executives.

Caldeira’s impact also extended into the Morgantown community, where he dedicated his time to inspiring the next generation. He mentored aspiring athletes as a youth coach for the Mountaineer United Soccer Club and visited local elementary schools to promote academic achievement. Additionally, he volunteered his time visiting and delivering handwritten, inspirational cards to patients at WVU Medicine Golisano Children’s.

In recognition of his community service, he was a runner-up for the prestigious Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award. Among other notable accolades, he is the first student-athlete at WVU to be a three-time Academic All-American and the first in any sport to be named a two-time CSC Academic All-America Team Member of the Year. Following a standout 2025 season, he was named the Sun Belt Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year.

He was also inducted into the Beta Gamma Sigma business honorary society and served on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, where he worked to enhance the collegiate experience by bridging communications among players, coaches and administrators.

Having played soccer since the age of 3, Caldeira continues to fulfill his lifelong professional soccer dream.
