Capt. William P. “W.P.” Chedester II has been named interim chief of West Virginia University Police, effective immediately, while current Chief Bob Roberts is on extended leave.

“As a 14-year veteran with the department, Chedester will lead and provide oversight to the department,” Senior Associate Vice President for Facilities and Services Randy Hudak said in announcing the appointment. “He has an extensive law enforcement background and his leadership experience will be a great asset in this role.”

Chedester is currently one of four captains in the 81-member department.

During his career with University Police, Chedester has become a certified law enforcement instructor, promoted to shift sergeant, lieutenant and then captain over Operations and Special Services as well as commander of the department’s Special Response Team.

Chedester is a Morgantown native and a graduate of Fairmont State University with a B.S. degree in criminal justice.
