A desire to repay West Virginia University for positive experiences has led Colonel Mary Ann Baughman, USAFR, Retired, to establish a new endowment for the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences that will provide scholarships for CPASS students.

“This gift offers excellent opportunities for our students. The funds fill an ongoing need at CPASS as we expand our programs and learning experiences for students,” said Dana Brooks, CPASS dean and professor of Physical Education. “Alumni support is critical to expand our offerings and to attract highly qualified students to our College. This generous gift by Mary Ann Baughman will help us achieve that.”

The W.A. Carruth, M.J. Pearse and K.J. Blakemore Scholarship is named in honor of the former CPASS professors. A 1965 graduate of WVU, Col. Baughman earned her B.S. in Physical Education.

“My desire to create the scholarship was to honor some very impressive women. Dr. Wincie Ann Carruth chaired the Women’s Physical Education Department and was and an outstanding role model,” said Baughman. “Mary Jane Pearse was an outstanding teacher and fencing coach. Kittie Blakemore was an excellent teacher, motivator and a pioneer in women’s athletics. They provided the basis for what we see now in CPASS.”

Col. Baughman grew up in St. Albans and now lives in Manchaca, Texas, just south of Austin. She earned her Certificate of Physical Therapy from the University of Pennsylvania and Master’s in Education from the University of Hawaii. She served as a physical therapist in the USAF and retired after a total of 35 years in the active and reserve forces.

The Foundation, in partnership with the University, is currently conducting A State of Minds: The Campaign for West Virginia’s University. The goal of the largest fundraising effort in the history of the University is to raise $1 billion by December 2017. For more information on the campaign, visit www.astateofminds.com.
